Kite Surfing Gold Coast Surf

Kitesurfing and kiteboarding on the Gold Coast can be done on most beaches where you have enough room to launch a kite.

Below is a list of my favourite kitesurfing locations on the Gold Coast.

Loders Creek/KFC, Southport

Loders Creek spot works well in in a north, north-east, south and south-east wind.

This is a very popular kite surfing spot. On top of the kiters already in a fairly narrow river, you will have beginners getting lessons from kite surfing schools, and the usual boat and watercraft traffic.

This spot is popular for rider of all levels.

The launching area is very tight and can be quite tricky self-launching. It’s best if you get your kite walked out from behind the trees to launch.

Narrowneck Beach, Main Beach

Narrowneck is a popular spot for kiters who want to be in the surf. Kite surfing in the waves can be much more hazardous than in the flat water, so it’s not a recommended spot for beginners.

There are less than 600 metres between the lifeguard flagged swimming zones so you just need to make sure that you don’t go within 100 metres of either of these. There is also a lot of foot traffic going up and down the beach so be careful when self landing your kite.

This spot works on anyting between a north-east to a southerly wind.

There is free parking here, I’ve always been able to get a park when I’ve been to this beach.

Burleigh Heads Beach, Burleigh

Burleigh heads works in a northern to eastern wind.

Don’t kite here if you are a beginner. There will be people swimming here no matter what the conditions. Self-launching and self-landing will also be difficult as there is a lot of foot traffic along the beach.

I’ve kited this beach less than a handful of times and have been lucky that there has always been another kiter to help me launch and land.

Currumbin Alley/Currumbin Beach, Palm Beach/Currumbin

I have not kite surfed Currumbin Alley but have watched kite surfers in the waves at this spot.

This spot works well in a North/North-East wind.

Be careful as there will probably be plenty of surfers in the water no matter what the wind condition. Only kite surf here if you can cope with kiting in the waves.

If you need a bit more space go south of the alley to Currumbin Beach, just north of the Vikings Surf Club. Here there is plenty of space on the beach to be able to practise and learn without worrying about any surfers or foot traffic on the beach.

This spot works well in a north, east and south-east wind.

Can You Kiteboard At Currumbin Creek?

It is advised that you don’t do this, read this article from Seabreeze as to why not. I have seen very experienced kiters in the creek, I don’t think it’s worth the risk.

Shearwater Park, Runaway Bay

This spot is similar to Loaders Creek. If you are a beginner this is a good spot to learn at. There is space to launch and park your kite between session.

Shearwater Park works from a north, north-east to a south-east or southern wind.

Be aware of boats going up and down this channel.

Main Beach (North), Southport

North of the main flagged swimming beach of Main Beach is a stretch of beach that does not get a lot of foot traffic and has a wide stretch of sand. This spot works best when the wind coming from the south, but also works in an easterly or northerly.

Just stay clear (at least 100m) of all of the flagged swimming areas and beware of the dumping waves.

Kite Island, Biggera Waters

Kite Island is a popular spot for kite surfing instructors to take beginners when teaching. Accessible by boat and can be kite surfed during both low and high tides.

Just be aware you are in the middle of the waterway so there will be plenty of boats around.
