Located 22 kilometres (20-minute drive) north of Bundaberg is Moore Beach. Chances are you will be the lone kiter on this beach so you will need to be confident enough with your self launching and landing abilities, at least there is a lot of space so you won’t have to setup near anyone.

There is plenty of free parking and it is an easy walk down to the beach with your gear.

Burnett Heads Marina is an ideal kitesurfing spot in northerly winds when the tide is high. The water is glassy smooth as it is protected from the wind from behind the rock wall.

If you are heading here are want to get some local advice, join this Facebook group to learn more. The launch spot is hard to find and it’s best to ask for local advice if you are unsure.

If the tide is below halfway and going down, head to the next best and closest beach, Nielson Beach, Bagara.

Nielson Beach is a good beach when the winds are blowing from almost NW to SE. The beach can sometimes be very crowded so only self-launch and land if you feel confident with your abilities.

There is plenty of free parking out the front of the beach or on the grass outside the caravan park.

There is lots of space at this kitesurfing spot for settings up, launching and landing. There is free parking located just up on the hill which is an easy walk down to any of the kitesurfing spots on offer.

This spot is a must kitesurf spot, it has the reputation as being on of the best in Queensland and Australia. They may even be able to hold the Olympic kitesurfing foiling events in 2032.

There are several different spots that can be kited at Elliot Heads, there are:

Elliot Heads – Lagoon

An ideal spot for beginners as it is not affected by tidal flow and is best on an S, SE or E wind.

Elliot Heads – River

The river tidal flow can be up to 5 knots, which is why this spot is only suitable for intermediate to advanced kiters. There are a few small islands in the middle of the river which create a few glassy water spots.

Elliot Heads – Open Beach

If there isn’t enough room or there isn’t suitable wind to kite in the river, then you can kite in the open ocean. Suitable in any cross to onshore wind condition.

A short 5 minute drive / 4.5 kilometres north of Woodgate is Theodolite Creek. A great spot that is never crowded. There are plenty of opportunities for flat water with several sand bars here, depending on the tide level.

You can even do a downwinder to Woodgate if you can get dropped off with your gear.

If you are staying at Woodgate and the tides are not ideal at Theodolite Creek, just stay at the main beach.

There is lots of room for you to choose from so you won’t be near swimmers or the flagged swimming area.

According to locals the best time to kite here is the last two hours before low tide, sand bars get exposed and some great flat water kitesurfing spots on the north side of the river mouth are created.
